Coffee’s Journey from Bean to Cup
Nathan, writer of The Beanstalker blog shares the best coffee infographic he’s ever seen; “Where does coffee come from?” Here are my top takeaways from the impressive artwork.
- Coffee plants are only grown on the Bean Belt, between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer
- After harvesting, coffee cherries are either dried in the sun and raked so they don’t spoil or separated from pulp during a “wet process” where they’re sorted by ripeness and size
- Once the cherries reach 11% moisture (through both dry and wet process) they are hulled, polished and sorted before export
- They are then inspected by a “cupper” before roasting and grinding
